From 2003 to 2008, FEMA began a process to modernize their flood mapping technology in order to move away from the use of paper maps. During that time, 95% of paper flood map distribution was eliminated as FEMA transitioned from scanned maps to digital flood maps or DFIRMs. At the same time, they updated the flood zone designations.
For those areas that are still not digitized, the data that appears on your map may be an old designation. The National Flood Insurance Program established a guide to further explain the zone designations. (see diagram)
In short, any digitized area of the country using the most current FEMA maps will no longer have Zones A1-30, B, or C, as FEMA has retired these designations. ACI Sky Flood® uses the new AE and X flood zone designations.
